About Legacy House Films

Every great story needs someone who knows how to ask the right questions.

Michael James Nelson has spent over twenty-five years in television, interviewing people, learning one thing above all else: how to tell someone's story. Legacy House Films is what he built with that skill.

Why I Started This

At some point in my career, I started thinking about all of the interviews I'd done over my twenty-five years in television — the moments when someone said something so honest, so unguarded, so inspiring, so true, that the room went silent. I've realized those moments don't happen by accident. They happen because, as an interviewer, I've learned how to read people, appreciate moments, explore without judgment, ask the right questions, and then get out of the way. You see, a great interview, I've learned, is much more than just cameras, lighting, fancy equipment, and a production crew. Anyone can put that together. What really makes an interview great is the energy and trust formed between the interviewer and the interviewee. That's what twenty-five years of interviewing people from all walks of life teaches you.

I also started thinking about the people in my own life — my parents, my grandparents — and how much of their stories I never thought to ask about until it was too late. The details. The texture. The things you only know if someone actually tells you.

Legacy House Films exists because those two thoughts collided. I have a skill that most people never get to use for the people they love most. I decided to change that.

Who I Am

I'm a storyteller.

I was born in Winter Park, Florida. I was an extremely shy kid, but I always knew I was meant to work in television. After attending Florida State University, I moved to Los Angeles, where I began my career performing stand-up comedy, and writing and producing television shows. Being a comedy performer honed my ability to read a room. Writing for television taught me how to create a story. Producing reality television – especially interviewing – gave me the skills to guide people in telling their stories. Now, I continue my career in New York City, working in television and comedy, and traveling around the country to tell great stories! Also, I've been told I'm the world's greatest uncle!

22 Years. The Rooms You Know.

Before Legacy House Films, Michael spent over twenty-five years behind the scenes as a producer and writer at some of the most recognized names in American television and streaming.

Twenty-five years of professional interviewing in studios, in living rooms, on location — taught Michael — sometimes called a personal historian — that the most important thing a storyteller can do has nothing to do with the camera. It's about creating conditions of comfort, warmth, pride, and an excitement to explore and share. That's the foundation everything at Legacy House Films is built on.

What We Believe

Stories don't preserve themselves.

The richest, most irreplaceable stories in the world are walking around inside people who assume someone will ask them about it eventually. Often, no one ever does. We ask.

The interview is the art form.

Anyone can set up a camera. What we do is different. We spend weeks before a shoot learning who you are, what shaped you, and what you've never quite been able to say out loud. By the time we sit down together, you're ready to talk — and we're ready to help you tell your story.

This is a gift that compounds.

A Legacy House Films documentary isn't a keepsake for today. It's something your great-grandchildren will watch. The value of this film increases with every generation that inherits it.

Let's talk about your story.

Every Legacy House Films project begins with a conversation — unhurried, no obligation, just the two of us talking about what you're hoping to create.
